We are excited to offer a trip to Stratton Island this year to see the nesting terns! This 24-acre island is located in Saco Bay, three miles east of Old Orchard Beach in York County. If weather or sea conditions prevent the trip, it will be rescheduled for the following day, Sunday, July 12th.
Participant Limits & Registration This trip is limited to 10 young birders, on a first-come, first-served basis. Once full, a waiting list will be created. The outing involves a boat transfer, boarding a small inflatable dinghy, and navigating an active seabird nesting colony, so we must limit participation to members ages 12 and up. Unfortunately, there is no space for parents on this trip, so only MYBC participants who are able to attend independently should sign up.
About Stratton Island Stratton Island has the highest diversity of nesting waterbirds of any island in Maine. Its beaches provide nesting habitat for Common, Roseate, Arctic, and Least Terns — our target birds for this outing. We’ll also be on the lookout for uncommon or rare visitors — such as the Bridled Tern that was seen on Stratton earlier this month. In addition to terns, the island also supports several species at the northern limit of their range (e.g., Glossy Ibis, Little Blue Heron, Great Egret, and American Oystercatcher), as well as northern species at the southern limit of theirs (e.g., Black Guillemot and Common Eider). The interior pond and wetland provide breeding habitat for waterfowl such as Northern Shoveler and Blue-winged Teal.
Logistics To reach the island, participants will transfer from a larger boat to a landing skiff or dinghy. Life jackets will be provided and must be worn at all times on the boats. Be aware that you will be wading to shore from the dinghy, possibly in knee-deep water — old sneakers or sandals are recommended for the slippery rocks.
Dress in layers, as it is often much cooler on the water than on the mainland. A waterproof layer is also recommended, as you may encounter ocean spray during the boat ride. Avoid wearing red, as it signals aggression to terns and may cause them to swoop at you. Due to terns actively defending their nesting grounds, wearing a hat is strongly recommended.
Please bring: a filled water bottle, snacks or a bagged lunch, a hat, binoculars, a backpack, and optionally a camera, notebook, and field guide. If you don't have binoculars, MYBC will provide a pair. Apply bug spray and follow proper tick prevention procedures.
Meetup & Pickup Meet at the Lobsterman's Co-op at Pine Point in Scarborough (96 King St, Scarborough, ME 04074). Participants will be divided into two groups with different departure and return times. Your group assignment will be confirmed after registration. Please note that departure and arrival times may vary depending on sea conditions. If transportation is a concern, let us know and we'll do our best to arrange a carpool.
There are no restrooms on the island. Restrooms are available at the dock — please arrive 20 minutes early to allow time and ensure a prompt departure.
Registration A registration email will be sent to all members with instructions for reserving your spot. Spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis, with a waiting list once the trip is full. Your confirmation email will also include your group assignment and specific drop-off and pickup times.
