November is prime time for rare bird sightings in Maine, so every year the Maine Young Birders Club (MYBC) visits Fort Foster in Kittery Point in search of a rarity (or two!). Its coastal location makes it a hotspot in late fall and year-round, and a migrant trap where unusual birds stop to rest. One of our trip highlights was a Long-eared Owl at Fort Foster in November 2024. Even if we don’t find anything rare, it’s a gem of a birding spot with plenty to explore.
Join us on Saturday, November 14th from 8:00 AM to 10:30 AM for a fun-filled outing to one of Maine’s premier birding locations. This beautiful 88-acre coastal park features three beaches connected by scenic trails and a long pier with excellent views of Whaleback Lighthouse, Jerry’s Point Lifesaving Station, and a variety of waterbirds. We’ll explore the varied array of habitats such as coastline, wetlands, and wooded trails in search of wintering species, lingering migrants, and perhaps some irruptive winter finches.
