For our December outing, the MYBC will take part in the annual Biddeford Christmas Bird Count (CBC). This year, MYBC will be responsible for surveying Old Orchard Beach and the surrounding neighborhoods, contributing our observations to this important count.
If the CBC is postponed due to inclement weather, an update will be sent via email and GroupMe on the evening of December 26.
The Christmas Bird Count is the longest-running community science project in U.S. history, bringing together thousands of volunteers each year to count every bird they see and hear. This decades-long dataset provides critical insight into bird populations and habitat health, helping guide conservation efforts nationwide. We’re thrilled to share this meaningful and fun experience with our MYBC birders!
LOGISTICS: Be prepared, there is a lot of walking on this trip! Dress in layers and wear comfortable walking shoes (note it has been SUPER cold in past years so please come prepared as we will be outside the entire time). Bring the following: filled water bottle, snacks, sunblock, a hat/gloves, sunglasses, binoculars, camera (optional), scope (if you have one), notebook & field guide (optional), and a backpack in which you'll keep all your stuff. If you do not have binoculars, MYBC will provide you with a pair.
MEET UP and PICK UP: We will meet at 9AM at the parking lot by the Palace Playland Ferris Wheel at Old Orchard Beach. Pick up will be in this same spot at 12:00PM.
CARPOOLING: We are not able to offer carpooling for this trip.
